European Glass Context 2008 forms part of a biennial symposium for European
Contemporary glass and ceramics. This biennial symposium takes place on the Island
of Bornholm, Denmark in September and October 2008. For the first time this event
presents contemporary European glass. Through exhibitions, a conference, workshops, master classes and a technical display an opportunity will arise to discuss and experience the situation of European glass today. All of the 27 members of the European Union are participating, as well as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
3 exhibitions will each present artists and designers from 30 European countries in the
categories: Established artists, Emerging artists and Industrial design. A national commissioner
from their relevant country will carefully select all exhibiting artists. In each of the 3 categories a prize of 10.000 € will be given to one outstanding artist. The openings of all 3 exhibitions will be held on the 13th of September 2008.
A workshop with invited students from all European countries will discuss current themes
related to the cultural and traditional identity of the European glass scene.
A conference will present papers on issues concerning tradition, technology and cultural
identity in contemporary European glass.
A master class will investigate new ways of glass making by looking at traditional process,
new technology and sustainable energy forms in a hands-on approach.
A technical display will present equipment, tools, materials and supplies at a sales fair.
